Introduction to Officine Gullo

Last month, Madsen Cabinetry’s owners, Robert and Barbara Madsen, along with Ethan Omdoll, received a special invitation to Florence, Italy. They visited Officine Gullo’s flagship showroom in Piazza Ognissanti. Hosted by Alessandra Gucci, this visit was not just a tour; it was a journey through history, artistry, and craftsmanship. Officine Gullo has earned its reputation as one of the world’s most exclusive kitchen makers.

The Setting: Officine Gullo House

Officine Gullo’s Florence showroom is unique. It is housed in a restored Renaissance chapel within the Church of San Salvatore di Ognissanti. The frescoed ceilings, arched alcoves, and historic stone walls create a breathtaking backdrop for their masterpieces of culinary engineering.

This “Officine Gullo House” isn’t just a showroom; it’s an immersive space where history and modern craftsmanship merge. Guests can see kitchens in use, attend demonstrations, and even participate in private dining experiences prepared on Gullo’s professional-grade appliances.

Our visit began with a warm welcome from Alessandra Gucci. She shared stories about Officine Gullo’s founder, Carmelo Gullo, and the brand’s philosophy. Alessandra explained how Officine Gullo preserves Florence’s centuries-old tradition of metalworking—using bronze, brass, copper, and steel—while blending it with cutting-edge culinary technology.

“Every kitchen is a work of art, handcrafted in Florence, and destined to become an heirloom.” – Alessandra Gucci

The History and Philosophy of Officine Gullo

Officine Gullo’s essence lies in several key principles:

  • Heritage Craftsmanship: Rooted in Florence’s artisan traditions.

  • Noble Metals: Copper, brass, and steel are used in thick gauges for strength and longevity.

  • Customization: Each project is entirely tailored, from finishes and dimensions to engraved details.

  • Sustainability: They create what they call “the antiques of tomorrow,” kitchens built to endure generations.

Through their Progetto Memoria initiative, Officine Gullo ensures that traditional techniques—hammering, burnishing, and engraving—are preserved by master artisans and passed to the next generation.

Experiencing the Showroom

Walking through the Officine Gullo House, we were struck by the seamless blend of art and engineering. We explored:

  • The Chef’s Island Kitchen: A centerpiece for demonstrations and private dining.

  • Professional-Grade Ovens & Grills: Blending commercial power with refined design.

  • Custom Refrigeration Systems: Luxury meets functionality with bespoke finishes.

Each appliance we touched carried the weight of craftsmanship—solid, timeless, and beautiful.

What This Means for Madsen Cabinetry

For us, the visit was inspirational. Officine Gullo reinforced our own philosophy at Madsen Cabinetry:

  • Attention to Detail: Every hinge and every finish matters.

  • Tailored Solutions: Kitchens designed around the client, not the other way around.

  • Lasting Value: Design and quality that will endure beyond trends.

Our clients can expect that same devotion to heritage, craftsmanship, and customization in our cabinetry and design services.

Bertazzoni: Six Generations of Italian Engineering

Founded in 1882 in Guastalla, Italy, Bertazzoni marries precision engineering with a refined design language rooted in Italy’s automotive and culinary traditions. Their appliances are built for consistency, responsiveness, and a coordinated look across cooking, ventilation, and refrigeration.

Signature design, distinctive finishes. The Professional Series is known for clean lines, knurled or sculpted control geometry, and a suite‑wide aesthetic. Designer’s Perspective: Style Integration Tips

For ZLINE: Pair the Matte Black Autograph hardware with walnut or espresso cabinetry for a warm, modern balance. For a more glamorous look, combine Polished Gold accents with white cabinetry and quartz countertops—striking a timeless, upscale effect without stretching the budget.

For Bertazzoni: Bold finishes like Rosso or Giallo pair beautifully with neutral cabinetry—think soft greys, whites, or natural oaks—allowing the range to shine as the centerpiece. For contemporary elegance, the Carbonio matte black integrates seamlessly with dark cabinetry and brushed‑metal hardware.

Our design team at Madsen ensures that appliance finishes don’t just match, they elevate the cabinetry, countertops, and overall flow of your kitchen.

How We Integrate at Madsen

Every project starts with your cooking style and space plan. Our team reviews ventilation sizing, electrical and gas requirements, cabinet clearances, and workflow—then aligns finishes and hardware to your cabinetry palette so the whole kitchen feels intentional, not assembled.

When designing a kitchen or bathroom, cabinetry plays a huge role in shaping the style and functionality of the space. One of the key decisions you'll make is how your cabinet doors are constructed and how they fit onto the frame. The terms full overlay, standard overlay, and inset are used to describe these door styles, and while they might sound like small details, they make a big difference in both aesthetics and functionality. Let’s break down the differences.

Full Overlay Cabinets

What They Are:

Full overlay cabinets are designed so the cabinet doors cover almost the entire face frame of the cabinet. The doors are larger and are installed to overlay the cabinet box completely, leaving very little visible frame. This creates a sleek and modern look, as the

face frame is hidden from view.

Pros:

  • Sleek and Modern Look: The doors cover most of the cabinet frame, giving your kitchen or bathroom a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

  • Maximized Storage Space: Since the frame is almost completely hidden, the internal space feels more expansive.

  • Easier to Clean: With fewer crevices and gaps around the door, cleaning is generally simpler.

Cons:

  • More Expensive: Full overlay cabinets are usually more expensive due to their construction.

  • Can Look "Boxy": Because of their seamless design, full overlay cabinets can sometimes give a more boxy appearance, which may not suit all design preferences.

Standard Overlay Cabinets

What They Are:

Standard overlay cabinets, sometimes referred to as partial overlay, are the most common cabinet style. The doors cover only part of the face frame, with a noticeable gap between the cabinet doors and the frame. The overlay is smaller than that of full overlay cabinets, leaving more of the frame exposed.

Pros:

  • Classic Look: This style has a traditional feel that suits many types of homes, from classic to rustic kitchens.

  • More Affordable: Standard overlay cabinets are typically less expensive than full overlay cabinets, making them a good choice for budget-conscious remodels.

  • Less Susceptible to Warping: The doors are often smaller and lighter, which reduces the likelihood of warping over time.

Cons:

  • Less Seamless: The visible frame creates a more segmented look, which may not appeal to those who prefer a sleek, modern appearance.

  • Wider Gaps: The gap between the doors and the face frame can accumulate dirt and dust, making cleaning a bit more difficult.

  • Inset Cabinets: What They Are:

Inset cabinets are a step back in design, where the doors are set into the cabinet frame rather than overlaying it. The doors are custom-built to fit within the frame, creating a flush appearance with a precise gap around the door edges.

Pros:

  • Timeless and Elegant: Inset cabinets offer a refined, classic look with a custom feel. This style is often chosen for its high-end, handcrafted appeal.

  • Precise and Custom Fit: The doors are made to fit inside the frame, giving a clean, tailored appearance. The attention to detail in this style can elevate the look of any kitchen or bathroom.

  • More Durable: Because inset doors are designed to fit snugly within the frame, they can be more durable over time and less prone to sagging.

Cons:

  • Higher Cost: Due to the precision required in manufacturing and installation, inset cabinets are generally the most expensive option.

  • More Maintenance: The precise fitting means that any expansion or contraction of the wood can result in doors that are harder to adjust over time.

Which Style is Right for You?

Choosing the right cabinet style depends on your personal aesthetic, budget, and the overall design of your space.

  • Full Overlay: Best for modern, sleek spaces where you want a clean and minimalistic look.

  • Standard Overlay: A great choice for more traditional spaces or if you’re on a budget but still want a quality, functional cabinet.

  • Inset: Ideal for homeowners who love a classic, custom look and are willing to invest in high-end cabinetry.

Each style offers something unique, so take the time to consider what best fits your

design goals and your budget. Whether you're remodeling your kitchen or planning a new bathroom, understanding the difference between full overlay, standard overlay, and inset cabinets will help you make the right decision for your home.
